Mary Baker Eddy, the discoverer and founder of Christian Science, penned the
phrase “radical reliance on Truth” in her revolutionary work Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, written in
the mid-19th century.
The concept she referred to was an absolute, no-holds-barred confidence in the infinite ability and eternal willingness of our Father, God, to care for our each and every need, spiritual, physical, emotional, financial and every other
capacity conceivable.
Such faith was indeed extreme in Jesus’ time. And after centuries of the dilution of the effectiveness of primitive
Christianity, it was again a drastic concept at the time Mrs. Eddy wrote it. To most of the world today, it is still a
very radical concept.
Mary Baker Eddy and a group of her students organized, in 1879, The First Church of Christ, Scientist. This church was
built in Boston, Massachusetts. Their goal was to reinstate primitive Christianity, as practiced by our Master, Christ
Jesus and his apostles. This far-reaching goal also included re-establishing the lost element of healing.
The healings attributed to Jesus seemed miraculous at the time and would, to many, seem just as miraculous today. Jesus was not the only individual who was able to heal in this immediate, spiritual fashion. Several of the prophets who
lived before Jesus were healers. And Jesus taught his followers how to be healers. Unfortunately, he left no clear-cut
rules for the demonstration of this healing power.
Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures is a guide-book to practicing the Principle required for these
demonstrations of healing.
